The relationships you build with pets and their owners are essential to their health and well-being, and any effort to cut you, the trusted medical provider, out of those relationships or to mute your voice should be met with an urgent rebuke.
We are writing today to inform you that online retailer Chewy, Inc. is engaging in a legal maneuver to do just that.
Chewy recently filed a lawsuit against Covetrus® that seeks to block veterinarians from communicating with your own clients who have placed orders with Chewy for pharmaceutical or regulated pet products. This lawsuit is the latest move by Chewy in an aggressive business strategy to dominate services historically led by veterinarians and to undermine the indispensable vet-client-pet
relationship.More importantly, Chewy has purposely sued Covetrus – and left out the party that stands to lose the most – you, the veterinarians.
You may, at this point, be asking yourself, “Why?” The answer is simple: Chewy views the vet-client-pet relationship as an impediment to sales, and they want to cut out the competition. The judgment Chewy seeks would cause substantial financial harm to veterinarians and would hurt your relationship with pets and pet owners.
Covetrus has asked the court to dismiss the case because veterinarians – and your pet patients – would be most affected by Chewy’s lawsuit and need a voice in this case. Veterinarians risk having your right to compete with Chewy to prescribe medicine and provide competitive options for your own pet patients stripped away if you’re not in this case.
